About Chatham University

Chatham University is an American university located in Pittsburgh, which is US Pennsylvania state's 2nd largest city and the county seat of Allegheny County, having a population approximated at a number of more than 311 600, at the time of the 2009 census.

The university was established in December, 1869, and first started as the Pennsylvania Female College, being founded by Reverend William Trimble Beatty, and was originally situated in the Berry mansion on Woodland Road off Fifth Avenue in the neighborhood of Shadyside. In 1955, it became Chatham College, in honor of William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham and namesake of the City of Pittsburgh, and adopted its current name, in 2007, when it gained university status.

Chatham presently offers its students 40 undergraduate degree majors, 18 master's degree programs and 5 doctoral degree programs, overall providing more than 500 courses of study, in a wide range of study areas.

Athletics

Chatham's athletic teams are known as the Cougars and they compete at the NCAA Division III level, in basketball, cross-country, ice hockey, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, volleyball, and water polo.
